Sri Lanka to jail people five years, fine million rupees for lying
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s is planning jail people for five years or fine them a million rupees if they affect national security or communal disharmony.
The cabinet of ministers have approved a proposal by acting Minister of Justice Ranjith Maddumabandara to amend Sri Lanka’s Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code, the state information office said.
Persons who spread false statements to disturb inter – communal harmony or national security will be jailed under the law.
It is not clear whether the law applies the media, telecom companies as well as individuals.
The proposal is coming as concerns are rising over the use of ICCPR law to jail members of minority communities.
