ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will make 13 million Sinovac vaccine doses starting in July 2021, Treasury Secretary Sajith Attygalle said.
“I think at this time of the pandemic the local manufacture of Sinovac vaccines, expected to commence in July 2021, with an initial 13 million vaccines will be a great help,” Attygalle told an investment forum organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Colombo Stock Exchange and the Board of Investment.
Sri Lanka’s state minister for drugs, Channa Jayasumana had said the a plant is being readied in Kundasale in Kandy to co-produce the vaccines.
It is not clear whether is making vaccines from scratch or its is a fill and finish plant.
Attygalle said Sri Lanka was spending 400 to 500 million US dollars a year on medicines.
Over the past year about 40 medicines were being made in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is on a import substitution drive after printing money to finance a deficit and keep rates down which triggered forex shortages. (Colombo/June07/2021)
