Sri Lanka to merge tourism promotion agencies under new law
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will bring a new Tourism Act to merge three agencies and repeal the existing law to be able to improve co-ordination and better manage resources, cabinet spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said.
Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau and the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management came operated as state agencies.
The new law would merge Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau.
The existing law would be repealed.
The cabinet of ministers had cleared proposal b the Minister of Tourism to repeal the Tourism Act No 38 of 2005 and draft a bill to enact a new Tourism Act.
Sri Lanka has seen severe decline in state capacity over the years since an independent civil service was broken in 1971 and analysts have called for fundamental reforms to make the government more effective. (Colombo/Apr06/2021)
