ECONOMYNEXT – The cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal to open 500 outdoor gymnasiums at a cost of Rs 625 million to “inculcate an active lifestyle” in Sri Lanka’s youth, co-cabinet spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said.
The move is expected to provide a catalyst for progress in the field of sports, he said.
Speaking to reporters at the weekly cabinet press briefing this morning, Pathirana said a trainer will be available in each outdoor gym. The project aims to cater to 100,000 members and 5,000 professional athletes each year.
The responsibility of running these centres will be delegated to youth and sports clubs at the local level, he added.
Pathirana said that Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa had proposed to the cabinet that the project be implemented in the period 2021-2022.
The construction of 250 such outdoor gyms is expected to be completed by the end 2021, he added. (Colombo/May04/2021)
