Sri Lanka to order 13.5mn Covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccines from India, UK
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had cleared the direct purchase of 13.5 million Coronavirus vaccines doses from India and the United Kingdom by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Minister Ramesh Pathirana said.
Sri Lanka is to purchase 10 million doses from the Serum Institute of India for 52 million US dollars.
Sri Lanka will also order 3.5 million doses from Astra Zeneca from the UK. The stock is coming under the Covax facility, he said.
Sri Lanka plans to vaccinate a total of 14 million persons, requiring 28 million doses, Minister Pathirana said.
There have been concerns that the vaccines have been erratic as there appeared to be no declared priority list.
Sri Lanka has not yet approved a Chinese vaccine, pending the receipt of State 03 trial data, he said (Colombo/Feb23/2021)
