Sri Lanka to promote 31,500 policemen
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is planning to promote 31,540 policemen without regard to existing vacancies following a policy decision and a recommendation of the management service department and police commission the finance ministry said.
Out of a force of 85,000, 31,540 were between the grades of constable and inspector.
The Ministry of Defence had informed the Department of Management Services to device a system to promote them without taking into account existing vacancies, on March 2019.
The finance ministry said it was not correct to say the Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera had said that there was no money to give promotions and he had nothing to do with the system of promotions.
The management services department of the finance ministry had accepted as a policy the promotion of officers without vacancies.
The police commission had asked for additional information from the Police Department in June. But no reply has come as yet.
After the information is provided, with the recommendation of the salaries commission and managemetn services division such promotions cold be given, the finance ministry said. (Colombo/Aug17/2019)
