Sri Lanka to punish corrupt individuals regardless of status: Austin Fernando
ECONOMYNEXT – Under President Maithripala Sirisena corrupt individuals will be punished regardless of status or positions, his secretary Austin Fernando said, after two senior officials were arrested taking bribes from an Indian investor.
One of the persons nabbed by the anti-bribery commission was the Chief of Staff to the President.
Fernando said the administration came to power promising good governance.
"This government will continue to punish those engaged in bribery and corruption," Fernando said.
The arrested persons were alleged to have solicited and accepted a bribe of 20 million to complete paperwork related to the transfer of land involving reviving a state owned factory.
The deal had been signed in 2015 with some Indian investors but it had dragged on. (Colombo/May05/2018)
