Sri Lanka to punish illegal fishing in international waters

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will introduce new laws to punish illegal fishing in international waters, as part of efforts to lift a ban on exports to the European Union.

Illegal fishing in international waters will be fined on the size of the catch and the boat, cabinet spokesman minister Rajitha Senaratne said.

Illegal fishing will be fined up to five times the value of the catch, he said following amendments to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act No 02, of Sri Lanka.
