Sri Lanka to raise Boer goats

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is to import 100 Boer goats as breeding stock to expand goat farming in the country, as demand for meat goes up, the state information office said.

The Department of Animal Production and Health will import 10 males and 100 female Boer goats to start a breeding herd supply commercial farms.

The cabinet of ministers had approved a proposal by Rural Economy Minister P Harrison to import the goats.

The Boer goat was originally emerged in South Africa (Boers were European settler farmers), with foreign goats inbreeding with existing tribal stock and it can survive in dry near deserts and grow fast.

Boer Goat are now raised in a number of countries including the United States. (Colombo/Oct08/2017)
