ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has order casinos, liquor bars, horse racing bookies and slaughter houses to be closed for the Buddhist poson festival for two days next week.
Supermarkets will also be prohibited from selling meat and alcohol on June 15 and 16.
Buddhist in Sri Lanka believe that on Poson full moon poya day an Indian prince turned monk, Arahat Mahinda, a son of an Indian emperor, visited the island and preached the philosophy of Lord Buddha to then king Devanampiyatissa. He is later believed to have become a naturalized citizen.
Sri Lanka has an Indianized Hindu-Buddhist culture and the islanders believe it was colonized by an Indian prince Vijaya swamping an earlier native culture signified by the legendary ‘yaksha’ princess Kuweni.
Similar legends are found in other Indianized cultures further to the East, colonized by Indian empires. (Colombo/Jun15/2019)
