ECONOMYNEXT – The government is in discussions to reduce the number of school years, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.
“Negotiations are underway to reduce the study period by one year. If it is possible, our children will graduate a year earlier, Gunawardena said at the prize giving ceremony of Visakha Vidyalaya.
Gunawardena said it was imperative “that exams should be conducted on time and results should be given on time. It will lead to receive graduation one year earlier.”
“As students, you have had a tough time. The country faced a very difficult time. Currently we are recovering from the prevailed crisis.
“All of us, including parents and students wish for exams to be conducted, results to be received and open doors for higher education on time. The government is committed to implement this schedule with determination. It is essential,” Gunawardena said.
“Our students lag behind heavily compared to other countries in the globe. Even in their 20s these children are still waiting to enter universities,” Examinations Department Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara said earlier this month.
A quick transition from school to work ensures that new labour market entrants remain young when they start working. This is essential because educated young people are innovative, barely risk averse, positive in their thinking, and open to change, the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) has pointed out.
Sri Lanka’s students have seen several school and university closures over the years, resulting in a delay of them entering the workforce, and an impact on the economy. (Colombo/September18/2023)
