Sri Lanka to tax online travel agencies
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will charge a one percent tax on online travel agencies on the commission they charge from customers in Sri Lanka.
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the move was in line with practices in other countries.
All informal hotels will be required to be registered and brought into the tax net Samaraweera said, presenting a budget for 2017.
Sri Lanka will also give easier access to credit for home-stays but they have to be registered, he said.
Three wheeler drivers will be given training on being tourist guides and they will be given sticker to display in their vehicles as a tourist board approved driver.
