Sri Lanka to upgrade trash collection with garbage compactors from Korea
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will acquire 190 garbage compactors to improve the refuse collection system in the country with a 14 million dollar interest free loan from Korea buy 190 garbage compactors for 84 local authorities, the finance ministry said.
At the moment many local authorities are transporting garbage in tractors with open trailers.
“As a prerequisite to promote sustainable solid waste management system, the capacity of waste collection and transportation of Local Authorities need to be improved,” the finance ministry said.
However the open tractors allow for easy separation of recyclable material, observers say.
Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank) of Korea will give a two Korean won loans of the equivalent of 14 million US dollars at zero interest.
The loan will have a 20 year repayment with 10 year grace period. (Colombo/July02/2018)
