Sri Lanka top business chamber welcomes polls verdict
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s top business chamber welcomed the victory of the ruling coalition led by the United National Party (UNP) at Monday’s parliamentary polls, saying the new government must work to restore rule of law and ethnic harmony.
The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce said it hopes the winners as well as losers accept the final outcome of the election in a peaceful manner, a reference to violence that in the past has marred elections in the island.
The elections commissioner has said Monday’s poll was the most peaceful in recent decades.
The pro-business UNP looks set to continue in government having secured more seats than the main opposition led by former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa, albeit short of a 113-seat majority in the 225-seat parliament.
“As the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce had been reiterating in the past, the country is faced with many a challenges; such as ensuring harmony and national integration, strengthening democratic institutions and rule of law and governance and adopting inclusive development strategies,” a statement said.
“We believe that being elected to govern the nation, the most critical responsibility of the new government is to work together with all the concerned stakeholders and develop prudent strategies and plans to overcome the critical challenges that the nation is faced with.” (Colombo/August 18 2015)
