Sri Lanka tourism minister anoints orphaned elephants

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister Navin Dissanayake has anointed elephants at an orphanage which is a top tourist draw at an auspicious time Wednesday as the rest of the country also underwent the traditional ceremony.

Along with other events such as lighting the hearth and cooking, being anointed by is part of a traditional New Year celebrations.

More than 100 elephants were anointed at the orphanage in Pinnawala and given a treat of ripe fruit, the tourism ministry said.
