Sri Lanka tourist arrivals up 19-pct in August
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals rose almost 19 percent to 166,610 in August 2015 from a year ago with China remaining the top source market followed by India, data from the state tourism promotion office showed.
The number of Chinese visitors, including those from Hong Kong and Macau, rose 73.3 percent to 24,734 in August 2015 from a year ago.
Chinese arrivals have shown the highest growth rate this year, up 76.8 percent to 144,439 in the eight months to August from the year before.
But Indian remained the top tourist generating market for the whole year with 193,674 visitors, up 28 percent up to August from the previous year.
Visitors from China, which become the top generating market in July 2015, relegating India to second place, accounted for the second highest number of tourists so far this year.
Indian arrivals in August 2015 rose 31.4 percent to 23,540 from the previous year, the data showed.
The traditional European tourist markets remained strong, with the number of visitors from the United Kingdom up 15.3 percent to 17,908 in August 2015 from a year ago and up 13 percent to 111,131 for the first eight months.
Germany tourists rose 5.3 percent in August 2015 to 10,913 and were up 12 percent to 76,469 so far this year.
Visitors from Russia, where the collapse of the rouble has weakened buying power, were down 11 percent to 39,764 so far this year but showed a recovery in August, rising 2.6 percent to 3,332 from the year before. (Colombo/September 4 2015)
