ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena has tested positive for COVID-19, the minister confirmed in a Facebook post Friday (27) night, hours after he attended a high profile meeting that included the president, prime minister, army commander and others.
The minister said several of his staff members had tested positive for the virus, and a rapid antigen test had confirmed that he too had been infected. He did not mention a PCR.
Gunawardena requested government officials and others who had interacted with him to self-isolate.
The minister was present at a COVID-19 eradication committee meeting held at the presidential secretariat Friday morning. It is not clear whether the high profile individuals present at the meeting would also be isolating. At the meeting were President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Army Commander Gen Shavendra Silva, Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, COVID Control State Minister Dr Sudarshini Fernandopulle, and Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, among others.
Video footage of the meeting showed that everyone present was masked, though there didn’t appear to be adequate physical distancing.
In a new Facebook post Saturday (28) morning, Gunawardena said he is working from home, over the Zoom teleconferencing software. (Colombo/Aug28/2021)
