EconomyNext – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sri Lanka from March 13 to 15, the first visit by an Indian premier to the island in 28 years, government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said Thursday.
The visit is a follow up to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena’s visit to New Delhi earlier this week.
Senaratne said talks on Indian investments in Sri Lanka will be followed up in more detail during Modi’s visit.
The last visit by an Indian premier to Sri Lanka was Rajiv Gandhi’s in July 1987 during which the Indo-Sri Lanka peace accord was signed.
Senaratne also said United States Secretary of State John Kerry was invited to visit Sri Lanka when Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera went to Washington during February 11-12.
President Sirisena has been invited to visit the United States, he said.
