Sri Lankan leader tells UN chief he acted within the law
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Friday said he had told UN chief in Secretary General António Guterres his sudden dismissal of prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was legal.
Sirisena’s office said in a statement the comment that he acted in accordance with the constitution was made during a telephone conversation between the two.
Sirisena had also assured Guterres of the government’s commitment to reconciliation with minority Tamils.
He also said there had been no violence since he dismissed Wickremesinghe last Friday.
But Sirisena held his ground, saying he had told UN Secretary General António Guterres in a telephone conversation that his action accorded with the law.
Wickremesinghe has refused to step down and challenged his dismissal.
