Sri Lankan, Maldivian leaders in talks to sort out visa issues

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka and the Maldives are to work out ways to resolve visa issues between the two countries after talks between visiting Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena.

A joint statement at the end of Solih’s state visit said the two leaders Tuesday agreed to make further efforts in strengthening people-to-people contact through enhanced trade and cultural ties.

“They also reiterated their commitment to work together in reviewing the existing visa regime between the two countries to accommodate the concerns of the Maldives with respect to student, parental and guardian visas, and the concerns of Sri Lanka on long-term business visas.”

In addition to the bilateral talks, a business forum was held during the visit in collaboration with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, where leading businessmen from both countries discussed ways for enhanced engagement.

The business leaders agreed to set up an appropriate mechanism that will promote business, trade and investment cooperation, as well as enhance collaboration between private sector operators, the statement said.
