Sri Lanka’s Colombo port to charter two tug boats
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Ports Authority will shortly seek proposals to charter two tugs as shipping movements and ship sizes are increase and straining ageing existing equipment and crew.
SLPA has been given the nod by the cabinet of ministers to charter two tugs, the state information office said.
Sri Lanka now has old tugs, which require more crew to operate than modern tugs. They are also underpowered and are not up to the task of shepherding increasingly larger container ships.
As tendering building new tugs from scratch may take up to 18 months, the port is wants to charter two tugs for at least 12 months.
