Sri Lanka’s election result debacle
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s 2018 local government election has been described by monitors as the most peaceful in decades. The release of results though is another story. It is the technical debacle of the 21st century.
The independent Election Commission had set up a state-of-the art system to release the results on its website while also sending results directly to the government Information department for distribution to news outlets.
However, the hi-tech system of the commission crashed on Saturday itself. two days later it was still down with an apology for not issuing official results.
"We apologise for the inconvenience," said a post on the website. The language was as faulty as the computer system. One could easily overlook the grammatical errors, but what is the excuse for not releasing the results.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa said the entire system had been a mess at the election commission.
The results published by all media outlets, are approximate calculations based on individual council results e-mailed from the information department. (COLOMBO, February 12, 2018)
