ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s latest custodial death of a 42-year-old mother of three children in Sri Lanka has taken a murkier turn with police officers allegedly trying to buy the silence of the victim’s family even as a criminal investigation got underway.
Police have allegedly offered 10,000 rupees to the husband of R Rajkumari not to press charges, an internal investigation has found.
Inspector-General Chandana Wickramaratne interdicted three officers on Friday and asked the Public Security ministry to transfer the Officer-in-Charge of the Welikada police. The IGP does not have disciplinary authority over OICs. Two constables were interdicted on Thursday.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which polices the police, found that Rajakumari was illegally detained and assaulted for five hours and other officers at the station did nothing to save her.
Autopsy photos showed she had been beaten till she turned black and blue. Economynext is in possession of the photographs which are too gruesome to publish.
Rajakumari had been taken into custody by police following a complaint by Sudarma Neththicumara, a businesswoman.
“Welikada police arrested her illegally and beat her on the instigation of a very senior officer,” an investigator told Economynext.
“After the woman died in hospital following internal injuries, the husband has been offered 10,000 rupees and funeral expenses,” the investigator said.
He said the case is no longer an internal disciplinary matter and the IGP has ordered the CID to undertake a murder investigation.

The incident has seriously embarrassed the IGP who had recently given an assurance to the Supreme Court that he will issue strict instructions to his men and women to ensure there were no more custodial deaths. (COLOMBO/May23/2023)
