ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Mattala Airport saw the maiden flight of Air Astana, flag carrier of Kazakhstan carrying 160 tourists under Sri Lanka’s bio-bubble concept of allowing tourists in.
Aitken Spence Travel, a Sri Lanka based inbound tour operator said it will bring in about 350 passengers a week through two regular charters until April 2021.
Air Astana operates from its base Almaty International Airport.
A second carrier SCAT Airlines will fly every Thursday to Mattala until April.
Sri Lanka’s Airport and Aviation Services, the state airport agency said Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) had welcomed over 2,500 tourists so far this year.
Mattala had also seen charters from Ukraine’s SkyUp and Ukraine International Airlines in 2021. (Colombo/Feb07/2021)
