Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa cabinet meets: spokesman
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s ministers who were appointed Monday by President Maithripala Sirisena amid had met Tuesday morning, spokesman Ports Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said as a political crisis intensified in the island.
After the contested appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, President Sirisena had moved to quickly consolidate power.
Samarasinghe who was ports minister before the political crisis and is continuing in the position, said a recommendation by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera to appoint S P D Siriwardene, a central bank official as director general of Inland Revenue was not ratified.
A proposal by Minister Thondaman, to start a Tamil language school discussed last week was ratified, he said.
Another proposal involving implementing an electoral law as deferred pending a discussion with other parties, he said.
The intention of the government was to discuss with other parties and go for provincial councils as soon as possible, he said. (Colombo/Oct30/2018)
