ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa trinity comprising President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and ruling party architect Basil Rajapaksa have failed in governing the country, opposition MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.
“The Mahinda-Gotabaya-Basil trinity has failed,” the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and National Peoples’ Power (NPP) leader said on Tuesday (June 29).
Dissanayake said the Rajapaksa camp’s original mantra was that it was Mahinda Rajapaksa alone who could turn Sri Lanka into the miracle of Asia; it was then claimed that it’s Gotabaya Rajapaksa that can take country towards prosperity; now the slogan seems to be that it’s only Basil Rajapaksa who can build Sri Lanka’s future.
“But when they’re saying this, they [tacitly] accept that Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa have failed, that they lack the vision or a plan for economic development. Basil Rajapaksa will later declare that another, younger Rajapaksa should be brought in,” said the MP.
With such rhetoric, claimed Dissanayake, the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is showing the people the failure of their leaders and their economic policies. By blaming such failures on individuals, he said, the SLPP is trying to normalise the idea that individuals can be brought in to save the country, like magicians.
“Since the day the current government was established, Basil Rajapaksa was a main player in the government,” Dissanayake said.
Rajapaksa was appointed as the head of the presidential task force for economic revival and poverty alleviation in April 2020.
“So he should be responsible for the state of the economy and the hardships faced by rural Sri Lankans,” the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader said.
Rajapaksa was also appointed as the head of a presidential task force to administer essential services in the wake of the spread of COVID-19.
“But when COVID cases were surging he was not even in the country. He went to America,” said Dissanayake, referring to Rajapaksa’s recent visit to the United States where he is a dual citizen.
Rajapaksa also heads a task force for “Creating a Green Sri Lanka with Sustainable Solutions to Climate Change” which Dissanayake claimed created the ongoing organic fertilizer issue.
“Was it successful? Today farmers are protesting on roads demanding fertiliser,” he said.
“Basil Rajapaksa is not a unique being who has come down from another planet after seeing the problems in the country. Nor is he a magician with a higher intelligence to solve these problems. Just like Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Basil must also be held largely responsible for the failures of the current government,” the MP said. (Colombo/June29/2021)
