ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s state-sanctioned ‘Agitation Site’, a piece of government land in Colombo dedicated to protests and demonstrations, is in the wrong place, Defence Ministry Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne said.
“When looking at this practically, we have all realised that the agitation site has been established in the wrong place,” said Gunaratne, fielding questions from journalists at a press conference Monday September 26 morning.
Sri Lanka’s Security Council will likely discuss and take a decision on whether to continue to have the site in its current location near the presidential secretariat, he said.
The official said that various establishments of importance such as government offices and tourist hotels where foreign dignitaries stay when they visit the country are located in the vicinity of the protest site.
“It becomes impossible to carry out the functions of the presidential secretariat, because those who come to protests don’t stop at the agitation site. You may have seen that they congregate at the site and then go straight to the entrance of the secretariat, which can then no longer function,” said Gunaratne.
Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe last week declared several high security zones (HSZs) in Colombo. The agitation site is located in one such HSZ.
Asked by a journalist if protests can no longer take place at the moment as a result, he responded: “You’re correct.”

However, Gen Gunaratne said, members of the public can move freely and leisurely in the area as the Galle Face Green, which it is part of, is considered a park.
“My personal opinion is that it is not a suitable place for the agitation site,” he said.
The agitation site, famously declared by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, saw several protests held against various decisions of his government during his brief term.
The so called Gota Go Gama (Gota Go Village), the result of a wave of anti-government protests held this year demanding Rajapajaksa’s resignation over his handling of Sri Lanka’s crashing economy, was also centred around the site. (Colombo/Sep26/2022)
