Sri Lanka’s Tamil party leader named opposition leader
ECONOMYENXT – The head of Sri Lanka’s Tamil National Alliance R Sampanthan was named the leader of the opposition by speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
He said the main opposition United People’s Freedom Alliance had not made a written request to name an opposition leader.
The UPFA is expected to join the United National Party of Ranil Wickremesinghe in a unity government.
Wimal Weerawansa told the speaker that more than 50 legislators of the UPFA had written a letter to be given to the speaker and handed it over to leader Maithripala Sirisena asking Nimal Welgama to be named the opposition leaker.
Speaker Jayasuriya said he had not recieved the letter. (Colombo/Sept03/2015)
