ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s United National Party has named Sajith Premadasa, the party’s deputy leader as candidate for the United National Front alliance at the upcoming presidential elections.
The UNP’s working committee met at 3.00 pm to consider the nomination.
The name was proposed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Minister Harsha de Silva said in a twitter.com message that a party convention will be called to ratify the decision.
Wickremesinghe has been resisting his appointment. But Premadasa had the backing of senior party officials.
The opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Party has already selected Gotabaya Rajapaksa as its candidate.
Sri Lanka’s elections commission said seven persons had made deposits to run for the presidential polls so far.
