Sri Lanks voters in high spirits
ECONOMYNEXT – Political parties have been offering liquor to attract supporters and get them in good spirits ahead of Monday’s parliamentary election, a monitoring group said Sunday.
The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said free alcohol had been distributed in the districts of Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, Kurunegala and Matale by candidates standing in the election.
Excise officials raided one such alcohol "dansala" (alms giving) and detected 67 individuals being offered bribes of liquor, CaFFE chef Keerthi Tennakoon said.
Alcohol was being distributed generously at a time when taverns and bars were ordered to remain shut ahead of the polls.
"Only in Badulla we saw action to stop these liquor dansal," Tennakoon said.
It was not immediately clear how the beneficiaries would vote once they get sober on Monday.
