State-sector women may wear saree, osari or other “appropriate” garment

An amendment to the 29 May circular on dress code for government employees states that women at the workplace may wear a saree, an osari (Kandyan saree) or any other garment deemed appropriate and does not conceal the employee’s face.

Male state-sector employees may wear shirt and trousers or a national suit, according to the amendment which was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers yesterday (25).

The Ministry of Public Administration had previously issued a circular which made it compulsory for female government employees to wear a saree or an osari to the workplace.
