Some of the blasts across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday were suicide bombings, State Minister for Defence Ruwan Wijewardena said today.
He said three policemen were killed during a raid, when a blast went off in the Colombo suburb of Dematagoda.
“We know some extremists are behind this,” Wijewardene told reporters in Colombo.
However, the name of the group will be withheld for the moment, in order to minimize public unrest, he said.
“We do not want to have communal problems, so we need your support,” he said.
Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando asked the public to remain calm..
“We don’t want to point fingers at anyone, but similar things have happened in New Zealand, which is a peaceful country,” he said.
Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said three suspects have so far been arrested, while more are being questioned.
Bombs went off in eight locations across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, including three churches and three major hotels.
The blasts killed more than 200, and 270 were injured.
The police has declared curfew till further notice
