Sumanthiran files a petition to Supreme Court
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran has filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to intervene as the President is not legally allowed to call a provincial council election under the old system without delimitation.
The MP has made these submissions to the Supreme Court as President Maithripala Sirisena had inquired from the Supreme court whether there is legal to hold a provincial council election in the absence of a report of delimitation.
In his petition, Sumanthiran has stated that according to the Provincial Council Elections Amendment Act No 17 of 2017, it is essential to have delimitation.
Sumanthiran has also stated in his petition that the court should inform the president about the law which the provincial council election cannot be held without delimitation.
