Thalatha denies approving American Bar Association presence in SL
Minister of Justice & Prison Reforms Thalatha Atukorale today (10 July) denied reports that she had approved the establishment of a branch of the American Bar Association in Sri Lanka.
Issuing a statement to the media, Atukorale said President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa’s remarks to this effect at a meeting with Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa on 5 July are untrue.
“The fact that President’s Counsel Indatissa presented this falsehood to the Opposition Leader without verifying it with either the President or the Prime Minister or me as the subject minister reveals how he has hurt the reputation of the BASL for petty political gain,” said Atukorale in her statement.
“As citizens of this country, I can guarantee that the President, the Prime Minister or I along with the rest of this Government will not engage in any activity that could hurt the motherland,” she added.
