Three new Governors appointed

President Maithripala Sirisena has shuffled his pack of Governors once again and three of them were sworn in this morning (5 Aug).

Accordingly, former Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne who resigned from his post as governor on Saturday (3 Aug) is appointed as the Uva Province Governor.

Former Southern Province Governor Rajitha Keerthi Tennakoon was appointed as the Central Province Governor and former UPFA MP Hemal Gunasekara as the Southern Province Governor.

Uva Province Governors office became vacant as the former Governor Marshal Perera gave his resignation to the president last week.

He resigned because his son MP Dilan Perera was supporting the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

Official Sources also told RepublicNext that the president decided to change governors because he had received numerous complaints against some of them.

The Governor position has become all-powerful in the Provinces where the Provincial Councils are not functioning.
