“Thripitaka Week” celebrated in New York

The Ven. Kurunegoda Dhammaloka Thero of the Connecticut Buddhist Vihara stated that there is a universal relevance of the Thripitaka to all human beings as it provides guidance on matters such as accepting diversity, living in harmony, building friendships, and achieving confidence.

These remarks were made during a celebration which was held to mark the “Thripitaka Week” at the New York Buddhist Vihara in Queens, New York, last week which was organized by the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event also celebrated the initiative of President Maithripala Sirisena to declare the “Thripitaka” as part of Sri Lanka’s national heritage and to have it included in the UNESCO “memory of the world” register for the benefit of all humankind. A Buddha pooja, Dhamma sermon, and an almsgiving were held at the event, and the Maha Sangha of the Sri Lankan Buddhist temples in New York were present at the gathering and chanted blessings.

Dr. Rohan Perera, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, highlighted the importance of President Maithripala Sirisena’s initiative to include the “Thripitaka” in the UNESCO register as it will help to protect the Buddhist scriptures for future generations. He then urged everyone to protect this heritage by supporting Sri Lanka’s initiative to have the “Thripitaka” inscribed in the UNESCO register.
