Top China delegation to meet President and PM

BILATERAL TIES: Sri Lanka’s current Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa with then China Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi at an earlier meeting.

ECONOMYNEXT – A delegation from China led by ex-Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi who is a member of the politburo of the Community Party is to meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today.

“Being the first ever Chinese visit in the South Asian region, since the global Corona epidemic, the visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between Sri Lanka and China, in the areas of combating the global pandemic and revival of economic relations,” the Foreign Ministry said.

China is a major financier of Sri Lanka.

For 2020 China had agreed to give 1.2 billion dollars in budget finance of which 500 million dollars had already been disbursed.

The delegation is visiting under a ‘travel bubble’ and will have two meetings under health protocols, the foreign ministry had said. (Colombo/Oct09/2020)
