Two Retired military chiefs, the two Saraths top their party lists in Colombo and Gampaha

ECONOMYNEXT – Two retired military officers have been elected to Parliament through rival parties, both topping their districts from their respective party lists.

The two are Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka and Rear-Admiral (Rtd.) Sarath Weerasekara.

Fonseka has topped the Samagi Jana Balavegaya list in the preferential votes for the Gampaha District, party sources said.

He got 110,535 votes while controversial former Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake received 103,992, Harshana Rajakaruna 73,617 and Dr Kavinda Jayawardana 52,026 to enter Parliament.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s Weerasekara scored the highest preferential votes at the Parliamentary General election, garnering 328,095 votes in the Colombo list party sources said.

The Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa scored high too with 305,744 while the National People’s Power chief Anura Kumara Dissanayake gathered 89, 414, Hiru Television reported.

Retired Rear-Admiral Weerasekara beat Wimal Weerawansha who got 267, 084.

Others elected on the SJB list are S M Marikkar, Mujibur Rahman, Dr Harsha de Silva, Patali Champika Ranawaka and Mano Ganesan.

In Gampaha SLPP sources said Dr Nalaka Godahewa was first while Prasanna Ranatunge was second.

These results are yet to be officially announced by the Elections Commission. (Colombo, August 7, 2020)
