ECONOMYNEXT – Two police officers at Sri Lanka’s Panadura North station have been interdicted after a suspect arrested for alleged quarantine violation jumped off a moving police jeep to his death.
Police spokesman Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana said on June 07 that the 42-year-old man was arrested the previous day by the Panadura North police while patrolling for people violating Sri Lanka’s unofficial COVID-19 lockdown.
On their way to the station, the suspect had opened the rear door of the vehicle and jumped off.
The suspect was granted bail by the Panadura Magistrate Courts and was later declared dead by the hospital at 6.30 in the evening.
A sub-inspector and a sergent who made the arrest were interdicted for negligence.
DIG Rohana said police teams have been appointed to conduct investigations into the incident where one team led by a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) will investigate the negligence of the two police officers and to initiate disciplinary action against them, while the other team led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) will assist in the magisterial inquiry and the post-mortem.
