Unchanged SLPP-SLFP alliance to fight Parliamentary elections

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will lead an unchanged alliance at the Parliamentary General Elections

ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party plus nine other smaller parties will contest the upcoming Parliamentary General elections as the ‘Sri Lanka Podujana Nidahas Sandhanaya’ the SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said.

This is the same coalition that backed Gotabaya Rajapaksa in last year’s Presidential elections which he won a resounding victory.

President Rajapaksa told journalists in December that the Parliamentary campaign will be “led by Mahinda Rajapaksa and run by Basil Rajapaksa.”

The alliance is assured of victory, but will strive to win a two-thirds majority in the House to make changes to the Constitution.

Yesterday Kariyawaswam added that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the Alliance Leader while its Chairman will be the former President Maithripala Sirisena. Basil Rajapaksa is General Secretary. (Colombo February 18, 2020)
