Under fire Sri Lanka Minister Marapana resigns
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s beleaguered Law and Order minister Tilak Marapana announced his resignation Monday morning ahead of moves to have him removed by his cabinet colleagues.
Marapana told reporters at a news conference he was resigning "to protect the government".
His defence of the controversial Avant Garde arms scandal in parliament drew severe criticism from those who had supported the UNP and President Maithripala Sirisena for good governance.
Marapana insisted at the news conference that there was noting wrong with Avant Garde’s floating armoury business which provided ‘sea marshalls’ and weapons to merchant ships to protect them against Somali pirates.
His resignation was announced even as his cabinet colleagues were holding a special meeting chaired by President Sirisena to remove him. (Updated)
