ECONOMYNEXT – The United National Party is seeking permission from the Elections Commission for the alliance led by it to contest the upcoming Parliamentary General elections under the Elephant symbol, former Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said.

He told EconomyNext that the factions supporting former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa had met earlier on Friday and agreed on the Elephant symbol for the alliance.

“If the Elections Commission does not give us permission to use the Elephant we will use the Swan symbol,” Kirella said.

“The deal is signed and everything is now sorted out,” Kiriella claimed.

Wickremesinghe, Premadasa, Party Chairman Kabir Hashim, Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Alliance Secretary General Ranjith Madduma Bandara seniors Ravi Karunanayake and Mangala Samaraweera were present.

Earlier today the UNP Party organisers, including Members of Parliament met in Kotte and unanimously agreed that the UNP-led alliance should use the Elephant symbol.

In the past week, the party was thrown into a fresh crisis when some members of the party’s top decision-making body the Working Committee insisted on the Elephant symbol while an alliance registered under Premadasa’s name had chosen a different symbol.

At the time the UNP led Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) alliance was to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections under the ‘heart’ symbol if the ‘elephant’ symbol is not given to the alliance within today, MP Ajith P Perera said.

Perera told EconomyNext that this decision was unanimously taken at the UNP parliamentary group meeting held this morning with the presence of Opposition Leader Premadasa. (Colombo February 14, 2020)
