UNP questions Gota’s candidacy given ongoing court cases
Questioning the suitability of former Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa to run for president, the United National Party (UNP) said today that the Elections Commission will look into court cases filed against him in Sri Lanka and abroad.
“There is a court case against Gotabaya Rajapaksa filed by a person named Rohit Manoj Kumar on 5 April 2019. In addition to that, [slain editor Lasantha Wickrematunge’s daughter] Ahimsa Wickrematunge has also filed a case against him. I would like to know how Rajapaksa renounced his US citizenship when a case was filed against him,” UNP backbencher MP Chandima Gamage said.
Gamage also questioned the legality of Rajapaksa’s Sri Lankan passport.
“This is not the first time that something like this has happened in the world. Even Hitler was presenting himself as a German while holding Austrian citizenship. There is a question as to whether we can allow such a thing to happen in our country,” he said.
