The United National Party will seek to build a broad alliance to ensure a victory at the forthcoming Parliamentary General election, Parliamentarian Vajira Abeywardena says.
Addressing a Press Conference at the UNP Headquarters Sirikotha in Pitakotte, today Dec 11, he said that the party will seek allies “beyond the current Democratic National Front” which was trounced at the recent Presidential election.
He postulated that such an alliance will seek to get more than 130 seats in the next Parliament.
He said that the party had now agreed that former Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa would be the Leader of the Opposition. “Therefore he should be our Prime Ministerial candidate,” the Galle district MP said.
However former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will remain the Party Leader Abeywardena said. “Being the Prime Minister and Party Leader are two different things,” Abeywardena said.
