UNP trade union urges UNP MPs not to create division in party
The United National Party (UNP)-affiliated trade union Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (National Trade Union Federation) today (04) urged its MPs including Ministers not to create division in the party by airing their personal opinions in public.
Addressing the media at party headquarters Sirikotha this morning, Deputy Organiser of National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) Ananda Palitha said that UNP never argued over its presidential candidate in the past.
“In the past, we never selected our presidential candidate in full view of the public. It was evident during the 2015 presidential election as well. Our Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa himself said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has not backstabbed him and allowed him to do his ministerial work. If Premadasa is saying this, what have the others got to say? We have to conduct meetings in order to make our candidate win the presidential election. But the problem is that there is another process going on behind the scenes,” Palitha said.
The Deputy Organiser further said that nobody can say Wickremesinghe is not competent enough to win the election.
“We cannot say that Ranil Wickremesinghe cannot do this because he proved otherwise in the last presidential election and he defeated the 52-day conspiracy. Sajith Premadasa said that he is not hasty. It is the others who are hasty Premadasa never said that he will join another party if he is not given the candidacy,” Palitha added.
