UNP will hold disciplinary inquiry on Ranjan’s leaked calls – Akila Viraj

An internal disciplinary inquiry will be held into United National Party (UNP) MP Ranjan Ramanayake over the leaked telephone conversations that sparked much controversy over the past few days, the party said.

UNP General Secretary MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told reporters that the party will probe the voice recordings featuring Ramanayake and several high profile individuals that have been making headlines since his arrest last Saturday.

The recorded calls leaked to the media so far include conversations Ramanayake purportedly had with interdicted former CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekera and Colombo High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka.

“We are clear that an investigation should be carried out regarding these recordings. We ask the government to appoint a Select Committee and, if someone is found to have violated the law, take action against them irrespective of their position,” said Kariyawam.

“As a party, we are carrying out our own disciplinary inquiry. A final decision on that will be taken in the next few days. We expect to take certain decisions not only regarding this incident but also pertaining to other violations of party discipline,” he added.

Kariyawasam further said the government ought not to use the leaked recordings to “hypnotise” the people in an attempt to distract them from what he called the real problems.

“This government didn’t come into power to entertain people with jokes. It has many obligations to fulfil. For instance, 100,000 jobs were promised recently. I challenge the government to give those promised jobs before the parliamentary elections,” he said.
