UNP will nominate electable candidate – Harshana
When the time is right, the United National Party (UNP) will nominate an electable candidate who enjoys the support of all Sri Lankans, UNP parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said.
Addressing the media at Temple Trees this morning (30), the MP said that those who started their presidential election campaign too early are facing problems at present.
“Although a presidential election has yet to be officially called, some parties have already nominated their candidate. We will nominate a suitable candidate when the time is right. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate has been out of the spotlight since last week. Now they are confused about what to do with their election campaign,” the MP said.
Asked about the conflict arisen in the UNP with regard to nominating a presidential candidate, the MP said that even the SLPP held divided opinions about its candidate before eventually naming him.
“When our presidential candidate is nominated all of us will support that person. As you may recall, before Gotabaya Rajapaksa was nominated as the SLPP’s candidate, party members criticized him calling him a dictator. Some leaders of their alliance said that they will not support Gotabaya. Likewise, we also have three potential candidates,” said Rajakaruna.
“Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not the country’s candidate, he is the Rajapaksa family’s candidate. The United National Front (UNF) led by the UNP, in contrast, will nominate a candidate the majority of the citizens ask for,” he added.
