US grants Sri Lanka Rs1.6bn to community reconciliation
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka was awarded a 10 million US dollar grant to promote reconciliation among the island’s communities, the US Embassy in Colombo said.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided the grant to Global Communities, a non-profit, to engage local communities in reconciliation activities.
"Activities will expand citizen-driven initiatives and networks among local communities and support those affected by the war," the US Embassy said in a statement.
The project also seeks to improve local governments and support organisations that provide services to the disadvantaged.
The project will increase opportunities for youth and women to exercise leadership in promoting responsible citizenship and reconciliation.
The three-year initiative will partner with the government of Sri Lanka and local civil society to promote a shared and inclusive Sri Lankan identity, reduce socio-economic disparities, and strengthen resilience among multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities.
