US urges Sri Lanka to recall parliament, says crisis undermining reputation
ECONOMYNEXT – The United States has urged Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena to reconvene parliament saying an ongoing political crisis is undermining the island’s international reputation.
"We urge #SriLanka’s President to reconvene parliament immediately to resolve the political crisis," State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a twitter.com message.
"Further delay compounds uncertainty in Sri Lanka, and undermines its international reputation and the aspirations of its people for good governance, stability and prosperity."
Sri Lanka was plunged into a political crisis two weeks ago after President Sirisena controversially appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister.
Incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe has said he cannot be sacked under the constitution and that a majority of legislators support him.
