ECONOMYNEXT – The United States wants to see credible and specific Chinese assurances to deal with Sri Lanka’s unprecedented debt crisis which will meet the International Monetary Fund standard of debt restructuring, the U.S. Under-Secretary for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland said.
The top U.S. State Department official concluding her short visit said “now all eyes are on China”
“All Sri Lanka’s major creditors are working with the IMF. As the largest bilateral creditor of Sri Lanka, we expect that China will provide credible and specific assurances regarding its readiness to join the rest of us in meeting IMF standards regarding debt restructuring,” Nuland told reporters in her 12-minute media briefing while responding to selected questions.
“So we are increasingly seeing all the rest of Sri Lanka’s creditors come forward with assurances and now all eyes are on China to do the same,” she said.
“India has made strong commitments that it will provide credible assurances that the IMF is looking for. What China has offered so far is not enough. We need to see credible and specific assurances they will meet the IMF standard of debt restructuring.”
Nuland also met President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Minister Ali Sabri, the top officials of the central bank and finance ministry during the visit.
The discussion with President Wickremesinghe focused on the on-going discussions with the IMF and the U.S. pledged to continue to support the negotiations with the aim of swiftly
resolving the issues, the Presidential Media Division said. (Colombo/Feb01/2023)
